This scan gives more detail of soft tissue structures, such as nerves, muscle, fat, gland, skin, and brain. The MRI is very useful when the tumor has spread outside of the parotid gland, when extra-parotid structures are involved, or when it is traveling along nerves (such as with adenoid cystic carcinoma).
